Are you noticing a strong earthy or musty smell in your tap water? MVWD receives a portion of its water from Northern California after it passes through Silverwood Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains, which is currently experiencing an algae bloom. Algae are microscopic plants that live in bodies of water and tend to “bloom” in the warmer summer months, giving the water an earthy or musty smell and taste. Their presence is not deemed a health hazard - your water is safe to drink! Metropolitan Water District is treating the algae bloom to improve the aesthetics of the water, and MVWD recommends refrigerating your tap water before drinking to help improve the taste.
