[ARCHIVED] Tap Water Fill Station Installed

Monte Vista Elementary students pose holding reusable water bottles next to new drinking fountain.

MVWD has unveiled its first tap water fill station unit at Monte Vista Elementary School in Montclair. The new, improved drinking fountain allows students to fill reusable water bottles with high quality tap water while reducing plastic bottle use.

“This new drinking fountain is a great opportunity to teach kids about the value and quality of water we provide to our customers,” said General Manager Justin Scott-Coe. “It also demonstrates environmental stewardship by reducing plastic waste.”

On Tuesday, February 15, 2022, MVWD hosted a brief unveiling ceremony with twenty of Monte Vista Elementary’s student ambassadors. The students learned about the value and importance of water, including the need to conserve and protect this precious resource. The student ambassadors were charged with sharing the message with their friends and classmates since the rain prevented all students from attending the ceremony.

“The kids’ were amazed when they learned how inexpensive tap water is compared to bottled water,” said MVWD Board President Sandra Rose. “They can refill their reusable water bottles 23 times for less than a penny, which speaks greatly about MVWD’s commitment to provide high quality water for a great value.”

All Monte Vista students received reusable water bottles adorned with the “Water You Drinking” logo. Teachers were provided with classroom activities and resources to help engage students in lessons on where our water comes from, about water users and uses, benefits of drinking from the tap and their roles in protecting our environment.

A second tap water fill station unit was installed at Howard Elementary School in Montclair. Their unveiling ceremony is planned for early March where all students and teachers will receive the same reusable water bottles and classroom resources.

Schools within MVWD’s service area are eligible to apply for the District’s “Water You Drinking” Tap Water Fill Station Program. This turnkey program will replace existing drinking fountains with a bottle filling/drinking fountain combination unit that delivers chilled tap water at the push of a button.
